Earlier this year, eBay Giving Works partnered with Smile Train – an international children’s charity that provides free cleft-repair surgeries for children in developing countries – to raise more than $75,000 in ONE WEEK as part of our Cause + Effect program.
Smile Train provides training and funding for local doctors in 85+ developing countries to provide 100%-free cleft repair surgery in their communities. With this sustainable, affordable approach, Smile Train has transformed the lives of more than one million children by giving them the power of a smile.
When we spoke to our friends at Smile Train about the impact of the funds raised through eBay’s Cause + Effect program, they shared the number of children whose lives have changed thanks to the generosity of the eBay community. Each surgery costs Smile Train about $250; so with $75,000 raised on eBay, Smile Train was able to perform 300 free cleft-repair surgeries for children from around the globe. That is a lot of smiles!
Kevin from Smile Train spoke about the generous spirit of the eBay community, saying “I was really surprised and excited about all the different items people were selling on behalf of Smile Train. There were even a few collectible trains and train sets, which I thought was pretty clever!”
