In many ways, Accion and eBay share a similar approach to improving our world by enabling commerce and connecting more people with more opportunity. If you’re not already familiar with their work, Accion is a global nonprofit dedicated to creating economic opportunity by connecting people from around the world to the financial tools they need to improve their lives.
Take Lilian Britez, for example, who lives in Paraguay. She has to use a wheelchair to get around, but certainly doesn’t let it hold her back from pursuing her dreams. She is a member of what’s called a “solidarity group” – an entrepreneurial group of 20 women, all of whom are receiving skills training and microloans from Accion partner Fundación Paraguaya to start and expand their own businesses. Thanks to this program, Lilian has learned to make decorative flowers, and her earnings from their sales are helping her stay afloat and financially independent. But she aspires to do much more.
In fact, Lilian was just selected to be part of an international training program in India where she’ll learn about solar engineering and how to implement it in her community. "I feel very good to be a part of this," Lilian explains. "I feel healthier, motivated, and full of energy. I'm excited to travel to India and come back with more useful knowledge, something that will benefit more than just me."
Given the natural alignment of our goals, it made perfect sense to bring Accion onto the eBay platform for the first time earlier this year. We are proud to help women like Lilian get their businesses off the ground and look forward to supporting many more Accion entrepreneurs in the future!
